Fellow Earthlings: we easily could be headed for a 6C increase in global temperatures (see here, and here too).

Such a level of warming would be catastrophic.

Scientists who study the ecological ramifications of global warming,

not to mention ambient CO2-induced ocean acidification,

are desperately hoping we can limit the average temperature increase to just 2C!

Well, you can give Mother Earth much needed relief.

Do your non-highway urban driving in a superbly

engineered 100% electric car with an energy

efficiency equivalent of 240-280 miles per gallon.

That reduces your emissions footprint by about 77% compared to burning gas or diesel to get around town!

Earth and Humanity Need You,... Now!

The time for every one of us to do more to help slam the brakes on societal and ecological decay is now.

The big energy companies are doing everything possible, right now,

to delay significantly reduced use of fossil fuels, so as to maximize their short term profits. Read the lead article in the January 2010 Rolling Stone.

We need to fight back by minimizing our use of their earth-killing products, right now.

I started Electric Cars of Albuquerque LLC for three simple reasons:

  1. The planet is dying, slowly being poisoned by toxic, acidifying, and global warming gasses; this is demonstrably leading to an intolerable risk of heretofore unimaginable ecological nightmares and inevitably related humanitarian tragedies.  Global warming also is a direct threat to national security. Rampant, unrelenting use of internal combustion engines is a major cause. The true cost of gasoline use is enormous; we the people need to start recognizing it, as inconvenient a truth as it may seem.
  2. Dependance on foreign oil severely biases and hobbles our country's foreign policy.
  3. Money that we send to the Middle East to pay for oil is a major source of funding, for the minority of people in the world that really may wish us harm. Richard Holbrooke, veteran diplomat, foreign policy expert, and currently our envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan recently stated that it is probably the major source. Again, the cost of gasoline use in terms of lives, treasure, and risk is orders of magnitude higher than what we pay at the pump.

Watch the world's glaciers melt in this astounding and alarming collection

of time lapse videos.  This is happening much faster than expected.

Sea level rise could be much faster and more extensive than previously predicted by scientists. Amazingly, one factor is that as polar ice melts, its gravitational attraction of sea water towards the poles diminishes. So sea level rises at lower latitudes, where most people live, could be incredible. See this report.

Even if you are not convinced about the importance of global warming or evidence that humans are majorly contributing to it, atmospheric CO2 content clearly is rising. It is beyond doubt that this is causing ocean acidification, as CO2 from the air dissolves into ocean water worldwide. The latest field work on coral reefs shows that we will lose them all if ambient CO2 levels rise to just twice pre-industrial levels. We are already about half way there. See this report.

Can you imagine a world devoid of coral reefs?

Even if that were the only consequence of heightened CO2, would that not be enough of a call to action?

Learn more about ocean acidification by clicking here, and also here.

So, please consider that you do not have to wait any longer to play in role in mitigating the sweeping disasters that threaten our world due to human CO2 production. You can make a real contribution NOW by fully electrifying your urban transportation. By doing so, you can attain an energy efficiency equivalent of 240 - 280 MPG, and instantly be powered virtually entirely by domestically obtained resources ranging from solar and wind power to hydroelectric, coal, natural gas and nuclear. A high quality, affordable, and substantially North American made specifically urban car is available right now!

I write of course of the the ZENN "Neighborhood Electric Vehicle."  I prefer to call the ZENN an "Urban Electric Vehicle." It will get you way out of your own neighborhood! I drive mine all over Albuquerque and adjoining Rio Rancho. It is well made, affordable, comfortable, strong, and Green beyond belief!

The Earth and already Humanity itself is begging for sustainable lifestyle shifts such as this revolutionary new class of in-town urban vehicle enables right now. Because, the impending catastrophe of global warming and ocean acidification and warming are real. They will cause massive population displacements that will be associated with disease, war, and starvation worldwide. The many health problems due to toxic emissions concentrated in our urban areas are real too.

And our national problems, including our declining foreign policy leverage and oil-related wars our children will get sucked into because of our heavy foreign oil dependence are not only looming, they are upon us. They could increase in intensity with terrible speed, unless WE ACT ; click to read this 8-8-2009 NYT cover story by John M. Broder.  Further, one of the best ways we can promote freedom and democracy in certain highly oppressed foreign nations is to stick it to the "petro-dictators" by de-funding them, not buying their oil, which you help do when you use an electric car; click to read this brilliant and profoundly true, IMO, NYT editorial by Thomas Friedman.

Electric Cars of Albuquerque LLC is a local family-owned independent auto dealership. We specialize exclusively in the fully electric, plug-in-anywhere vehicles manufactured by ZENN Motor Company of Canada. Why such a new business commitment in these difficult economic times? Because sustained recovery from these times calls for major grass roots change in how we power America and how we use that new power. Moreover, we believe that ZENN vehicles offer people of varied financial means a truly important opportunity to participate in the large adjustment we have to make together to become a smarter, greener society - a better member of the global community of nations and steward of the Earth's natural ecological systems. You'll feel like you've evolved into a better kind of Homo sapiens when you're riding in your ZENN. Hey, dinner is on me if you don't.

ZENN doing its courtship display: look no gas tank, no tailpipe, no oil dipstick!

ZENN in full courtship display: "Look here! No gas tank, no dipstick, no tailpipe!"

Our business is dedicated to offering New Mexicans all across “The Land of Enchantment” a new class of fully electric urban car - a "robustified" version of the so-called "Low Speed Electric Vehicle" (LSV), namely, the “Medium Speed Electric Vehicle” (MSV). The names are dead boring. But, to us it is exciting to be involved in our small way in helping to usher in a sorely needed revolution in urban transportation that MSV's could strongly support.

Presently, the ZENN is classed by the Federal Government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a 25 mph "Low Speed Vehicle" (LSV); it is exclusively imported and sold as such by Electric Cars of Albuquerque, LLC. But, please see the Green Action Alert, below! Although our 2009 legislative effort ended in very frustrating failure, we are actively pushing for State regulatory evolution that will relax this speed restriction and allow consumers to reprogram certain strongly built electric LSV's, like the ZENN, to reach a top speed of 35 mph.

We believe that the ZENN is the best, most affordable, and most readily available LSV / MSEV-candidate made: one that can plug in any 110v outlet for recharging, and one that is specifically designed for power-efficient, economical, gas free, emission free, yet substantial urban driving. The ZENN is designed to be a comfortable around town errand car, one that can cover 80-90% of many people’s city driving needs, and do it  in the most environmentally friendly and socially responsible way currently possible.

We have to rekindle the interest of American citizens in "appropriate technology" to solve many of our world's problems. For those seeking truly appropriate ultra-efficient urban transportation technology, ZENN vehicles hit the bull's eye.

An investment in a ZENN as a second or third vehicle, places you on the pioneering edge of the effort, that people across the political spectrum increasingly agree our society must make, to (1) reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil, (2) reduce the pressure to drill for domestic oil in environmentally sensitive natural areas, and (3) to reduce our daily output of poisonous, acidifying, and global warming emissions.

ZENN's have front wheel drive and an overbuilt welded aluminum crash cage.

GREEN ACTION ALERT!

You are Needed Now to Participate in the Evolution of Electric Car Law

Electric car innovators like the founders of ZENN Motors have caused the LSV, often also dubbed the “Neighborhood Electric Vehicle” (NEV) to evolve. For the good of the nation and the planet, laws governing the use of such vehicles have to evolve now as well.

ZENN LSV's / NEV’s represent a substantially more robust kind of urban electric car than the earlier, more "golf cart like" versions. ZENN's are built to significantly higher standards not just of comfort, but enhanced safety, and are much more capable of getting you securely out of your neighborhood, through diverse mixed traffic city environments, rain or shine!

At the moment, the ZENN is classified by the Federal DOT's National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) as an LSV. In spite of well informed petitions to do so, NHTSA has not yet seen fit to provide Federal rules for an MSV class of vehicle, perhaps partly under pressure from the former Bush Administration, the oil industry, and American car makers who do not have an MSV for sale.

Thus, the ZENN's adjustable electronic governor limits it to a top speed of 25 mph, and presently in New Mexico it can legally travel only on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less.

We believe the ZENN is a fantastically configured and progressive urban vehicle

even under these Federal speed constraints.

Since late June or '09, I have put over 4800 miles on our family ZENN

at a maximum speed of 25 mph, and guess what?

I'm FINE!

However, the ZENN arguably is very safe to drive at speeds of up to 35 mph (see information below and on the "Specifications" page) on diverse urban roads posted for low to moderate speeds up to 45 mph. A modest liberalization of its speed restrictions would vastly increase its public acceptance, and thus enable this fine plug-in alternative transportation technology to do much more to help us collectively cope with intertwined national and global emergencies generated by toxic and global warming emissions and our debilitating reliance on foreign oil.

Thanks to New Mexico Representative Rick Miera and Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino, legislation is continuing to circulate in our capital, Santa Fe, that would create a new "Medium Speed [Electric] Vehicle" (MSV) class of urban car for New Mexico, with more appropriate speed restrictions (click here to see the New Mexico MSEV legislation as introduced to the House on 01/27/2009; HB0294) . If passed, the NM legislation would permit MSEV's to travel up to 35 mph on roads posted for 45 mph or less. Several other states, such as Washington and Montana, have already passed similar laws that give electric cars like the ZENN MSV status (e.g., click here to see the Washington MSEV Law, as passed).

Progress stifled for now... No, WAIT!!

Here's the history. With the help of calls, e-mails, and consistently strong appearances by Representative Rick Miera, pro-MSEV House Bill 294 (1) won a 3/2 "Do Pass" vote in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee on 2/12/2009, (2) won a 10/0 "Do Pass" in the House Transportation and Public Works Committee on 2/19/2009, AND, on Saturday 2/21/09, won a resounding, unanimous 66 - 0 YES vote on the House Floor!

Working on the Senate side , with most Committee members present, we won a 5 - 2 YES vote for HB 294 in the Corporations and Transportation Committee, Chaired by Senator Phil Griego, on the evening of March 14th. Senator Ortiz y Pino kindly sat with me before the C&T Committee as Rep. Miera dealt with a family emergency. Days later, in an evening meeting, HB294 passed "on consent" the Senate Public Affairs Committee, chaired by Senator Dede Feldman. It then was immediately scheduled for a vote on the Senate Floor.

Sadly, in spite of our sponsors' best efforts, the Senate ran out of time and adjourned Sunday, March 20th at Noon, without voting on HB294. The bill simply was tabled, and New Mexico's MSEV law was not passed.

NEW! In a meeting with Senator Ortiz y Pino, Governor Richardson expressed interest in placing HB294a on his "call list" of bills to be passed during the next special legislative session, possibly in the early Fall of 2009.

Please, call Governor Richardson at (505) 476-2200 and ask him to follow through with this!

Mayor Martin Chavez, as well as the Albuquerque City Council, led by Councillor Debbie O'Malley, have officially requested that HB294a be on the Governor's "call" for the January 2010 legislative session.

Yesterday (01/08/2010) Senate Floor Majority Leader Michael Sanchez kindly returned my calls and e-mails to him about the bill. We had an exchange that I found very encouraging. Senator Sanchez did emphasize, however, how full and complex the demands placed on the Senate and House would be this upcoming session. So making sure that the Governor and your own New Mexico Senators and Representatives advocate for HB294a as strongly as possible is all the more important.

Thanks so much to all of you who are helping with HB294a.

Don't stop!

Advocate w/ State and Federal officials for a Medium Speed Vehicle (MSEV) class of car.

Don't wait for speed laws for efficient robust urban vehicles to change, which they will.

"Be The Change, Now."

The Earth and the Nation need your willingness

to implement meaningful lifestyle change as much as ever, now.

Three ZENN's on the lot, waiting to help you reduce your carbon footprint.

It also is now time to strongly urge the new Federal Government in Washington to create an MSEV classification allowing robust NEV's like the ZENN to perform at more practical speeds and according to their true capabilities. The Bush Administration's National Highway Transportation Safety Agency (NHTSA) recently refused to take action on several Federally-directed petitions for the progressive making of Federal MSV rules and definitions (see Federal Register, V. 73, No. 188, Friday, September 26, 2008 / Proposed Rules). We must let the Obama Administration (phone: 202-456-1111) as well as our Federal Senators & Representatives, know of our support for a MSEV law that helps provide the public with more practical 100% electric urban transportation choices. See my legislative handout on this issue, including Appendix D, which addresses directly the inadequacies and distortions of NHTSA's September 2008 ruling, denying petitions for MSV rulemaking..

Unlike their early electrical LSV predecessors, ZENN cars are squarely in the MSV league of electric cars. They are built with a substantial occupant-protecting crash cage including an integrated a roll bar (see photo on the "Specifications" page). They have full 3-point seat belt systems. In fact, ZENN’s are built around a high-tech welded aluminum frame imported from Microcar of France - a frame used in a European car designed for 70-80 mph highway travel. They are tight, completely enclosed vehicles where occupants are surrounded, as in a typical car, with body panels and real automotive safety glass. MSV’s also have high quality braking systems on all four wheels, electrically regenerative ones in the case of the ZENN. Moreover, MSV’s have frontal crash protection in which the impact absorption capacity of the safety cage itself is strategically supplemented with batteries, the motor, and a front wheel drive train system all are located in the front. In contrast genuine LSV golf cart like vehicles are rear wheel drives with the batteries typically located under the seat. Read The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch November 28, 2008 press release concerning the views of "Electric Mobility Canada" on NEV safety in real world, "mixed-use environments." Available data strongly suggest that these vehicles have excellent safety records.

Vehicular weight and inertia are important to consider when evaluating the safety of LSV's or MSV's. Weighing under 1500 lbs, ZENN crash cages experience lower crushing forces during any collision or rollover than typical cars, whether they hit something or something hits them. Light weight and low inertia also helps protect the occupants of other vehicles. For the same reason, MSV's and LSV's also have shorter stopping distances during emergency braking, helping to avoid accidents in the first place. The fact that they are traveling at low to medium speeds, on low to medium speed urban roads obviously also contributes to safety by reducing the impact forces generated in any collision. Click here to see a report on this topic by Steve Mayeda, a Washington ZENN dealer.

The urban driving niche is HUGE, and perfectly filled by the ZENN.

Comments on the ZENN NEV as a "Niche Vehicle."Let's Create ZENN'en on Earth.

Well meaning folks warn me that I am risking too much time, energy, and family treasure trying to market a "niche vehicle." You also see the ZENN referred to this way in many news reports. The term "niche vehicle" seems to imply that the ZENN NEV is useful only in very special narrow circumstances, so almost nobody will want one.

That's wrong, but it requires a change in thinking. Indeed, a paradigm shift that entails a realization that we cannot constantly keep driving cars designed for the highway around our towns and cities. Highway horsepower and armor, especially if it entails gas-burning internal combustion technology, has to stay in the garage until its really needed.

I'd just like to point out two things I believe about the ZENN's niche. First, it's niche is moderate daily distance URBAN DRIVING. That is a massive critical niche, and it needs to be recognized as such!

With the ZENN, you get 25-35 miles per overnight charge. If you can plug-in at work or one of the places you visit in a day, you can get a 80% charge in 4-hours, and a 10 mile range boost with a plug-in of just one hour. You could cover 70+ miles per day in the ZENN under such reasonable circumstances - I have done so. When the ZENN's batteries are partially drained, they take on charge very rapidly. Just bring your extension cord; I'll give you a good 25-footer. You meet nice interesting people plugging in here and there, and obtaining such a boost only takes 10-30 cents worth of their electricity. Carry a roll of quarters along with your extension cord.

Second, the massive urban driving niche must be substantially revamped, such that it becomes truly dominated by appropriate transportation technology. Consider: whether you voted for Obama or McCain last November, or even if you couldn't bring yourself to vote (not a recommended practice), you probably recognize that the CHANGE everyone was talking about during the campaign and, thankfully, even now, with regard to protecting natural and national security were not itty-bitty changes. No. We need to make big changes, together, (1) to peacefully preserve and improve the socio-political world order and America's contribution to it, and (2) to avoid wholesale destruction of our planetary ecosystems. Committing to an LSEV or MSEV for your urban driving is the kind of pioneering change that really makes a difference, right now. I believe that many people will not only find it possible to tolerate this particular change, but once they experience going around town in the ZENN urban electric vehicle, as I have, it will bring them true joy!  Indeed, I believe there is a real happiness that comes from personally implementing Gandhi's famous line, "We must be the change we seek."

Think about the misleading "niche vehicle" appellation this way. You could just as easily call beavers "niche animals." Some even think of them as pests. So should we just make coats and hats out of them all?  No! Because in fact, beaver collectively have played a massive role in creating healthy ecological diversity throughout most riparian ecosystems. Many of the animal and plant species that live in and around riparian zones depend on the busy beaver to create the resources and habitats they need to live. So, get out there in your niche vehicle, the LSEV / MSEV, and get busy supporting life as you go about your daily activities.
